Phase transitions and iron-ordered moment form factor in LaFeAsO
نویسندگان
چکیده
Elastic neutron-scattering studies of single-crystal LaFeAsO reveal that upon cooling, an onset of the tetragonal (T)-to-orthorhombic (O) structural transition occurs at TS≈156 K, and it exhibits a sharp transition at TP≈148 K. We argue that in the temperature range TS to TP, T and O structures may dynamically coexist possibly due to nematic spin correlations recently proposed for the iron pnictides, and we attribute TP to the formation of long-range O domains from the finite local precursors. The antiferromagnetic structure emerges at TN≈140 K, with the iron moment direction along the O a axis. We extract the iron magnetic form factor and use the tabulated ⟨j0⟩ of Fe, Fe2+, and Fe3+ to obtain a magnetic moment size of ∼0.8 μB at 9.5 K.

Importance of electronic correlations for structural and magnetic properties of the iron pnictide superconductor LaFeAsO
Importance of electronic correlations for structural and magnetic properties of the iron pnictide superconductor We present calculations of structural and magnetic properties of the iron-pnictide superconductor LaFeAsO including electron-electron correlations. For this purpose we apply a fully charge self-consistent combination of density-functional theory with the dynamical mean-field theory, ...
متن کاملTheory of electron nematic order in LaFeAsO
We study a spin S quantum Heisenberg model on the Fe lattice of the rare-earth oxypnictide superconductors. Using both large S and large N methods, we show that this model exhibits a sequence of two phase transitions: from a high-temperature symmetric phase to a narrow region of intermediate “nematic” phase, and then to a low-temperature spin ordered phase. Identifying phases by their broken sy...
متن کاملMagnetic moment formation due to arsenic vacancies in LaFeAsO-derived superconductors
Arsenic vacancies in LaFeAsO-derived superconductors are nominally non-magnetic defects. However, we find from a microscopic theory in terms of an appropriately modified Anderson-Wolff model that in their vicinity local magnetic moments form. They can arise because removing an arsenic atom breaks four strong, covalent bonds with the neighboring iron atoms. The moments emerging around an arsenic...
متن کاملTemperature-dependent striped antiferromagnetism of LaFeAsO in a Green's function approach.
We use a Green's function method to study the temperature-dependent average moment and magnetic phase-transition temperature of the striped antiferromagnetism of LaFeAsO, and other similar compounds, as the parents of FeAs-based superconductors. We consider the nearest and the next-nearest couplings in the FeAs layer, and the nearest coupling for inter-layer spin interaction. The dependence of ...
متن کاملMETAL-NON METAL TRANSITIONS IN TRANSITION METAL COMPOUNDS.THE ELECTRONIC PHASE TRANSITIONS IN FeS AND NiS
FeS and NiS show first order phase transitions with a change in electronic structure at Ta = 415 K and Tt = 265 K respectively, the latter depending sensitively on non-stoichiometry in the form of nickel vacancies. Extensive experimental data on NiS is reviewed which shows that the low-temperature phase is a semimetallic itinerant-electron antiferromagnet and the high temperature phase a weakly...
